Hello Sweet Cheer: November 2012

Thanksgiving & Hurt Feelings

Hi bloggie friends!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving spending time with friends & family!  I sure had an awesome few days off of school & work!  I got a hair cut, had a dermatologist appointment & even got to catch up with my best friend over breakfast on Saturday!  I spent five wonderful nights at my parents house in McKinney & got back to Lubbock Sunday evening.  Here are some fun pictures from my visit with family & our Thanksgiving celebration!

Unfortunately, after such a great week I came home to find out that my house had been broken into while my roommate & I were away.  Womp womp womp.  Huge bummer!

My roommate got home first & texted me about it while I was still on the road.  A few of our things were taken, our house was a wreck, & my feelings were hurt.  I don't know how else to describe what I felt when I found out.  I felt violated.  I felt hurt.  I was super bummed out.  It's a weird feeling to know something like that happened & there is nothing you can do to change it.  I've had a rough time sleeping the past few nights which is tough, not to mention I'm starting to get sick.

Even though it stinks & I'm frustrated about the whole situation, God has taught me two very important things over the past few days.  First it's been cool to realize how God is still God in every situation.  He is still concerned with the details & still has His hand on everything.  For example, I feel extremely blessed that I didn't get home first.  My roommate walked in to see the house in shambles & I had a few hours to prepare myself to see what had happened.  Also, my roommate Josefine doesn't have a car, so I'm incredibly thankful that she wasn't there when it happened!  If she had been there they might not have known & that would have been an entirely different experience.  The Lord is really teaching me how He is constantly working in our lives & how He is still orchestrating the details, things that seem minute but turn out to be very important.

Missing this simple piece of jewelry today.

The second thing I feel like the Lord has taught me is, ironically, thankfulness.  I just feel blessed to have a roof over my head, food in my fridge, & a cozy warm bed to sleep in.  Those things aren't rights, they are privileges & after having my house broken into, I'm even more aware of that.  I am blessed to have a car to drive & clothes to wear.  Although we are now transitioning out of the season of Thanksgiving & into the season of Christmas, I find it so important not to allow the heart of thankfulness to leave us.  I think more than anything this season should be an extension of thanks with an addition of selflessness!

My challenge to you is this: For the next month or so, try your best to focus on doing things for others.  Not with an attitude of pride but with an attitude of service.  We are so blessed in this country with so many freedoms & a lot of privileges so I pray that we might be able to reflect on the blessings in our own lives so that we can focus on being a part of the betterment of others' lives!

Happy Wednesday & welcome to the Christmas season!

Blogiversary 1: Goals, Goals, Goals!

Today is the last day of my very first Blogiversary Week!

I have so enjoyed this week & I really hope you have too!  Today I'm going to lay out some of my goals; personal goals, life goals, & goals for the blog!

My first & the most important goal I strive toward is bringing Glory to God in everything I do.  I want to honor Him in every moment of my life, do work for the Kingdom, & take part in sanctification.  I've talked about what sanctification is on the blog before, but again that's just a big churchy word for "being made holy".  I believe sanctification is a lifelong process of seeking the Lord, and allowing Him to draw me into deeper holiness with Him.  So that's the most important goal in my life; bringing Glory to the Lord in my every day life.

Secondly, my life goals & more so desires are to be in ministry through being a Godly wife, a Christ seeking mother, & a woman who fears the Lord.  That seems like a lot of different things, but my heart's desire is to be a wife, to honor my husband, & love him well.  My heart's desire is to be a mother who loves & cares for her children like Christ cares for us.  I want nothing more than to have a family & serve them.  I believe the Lord has crafted me with a heart to love & serve the people closest to me & I'm excited about having that in my life one day!

Thirdly, my goals for this blog are that it might continue to grow!  I hope that it is making an impact on someone's life.  I hope & pray that the Lord would use it in a way to bring Glory back to Himself.  I hope that one day this blog might be a segway into more active ministry.  I pray that ministry opportunities might arise through the blog & that the Lord would use it in whatever way He so desires!

Well, that wraps up Day #5 of Blogiversary Week!  Thank you so much everyone who has been reading & supporting me through this ministry!

Happy Friday!

Blogiversary 1: Top 5 Favorite Bloggy Reads

Day #4 of Blogiversary Week, here goes!  I've mentioned before that I follow a lot of blogs!  Today I want to share with you all my Top 5 Favorites!

I follow five different types of blogs so I've chosen one from each category that is my favorite!  The categories are Family, DIY, Ministry, Adoption, & Personal.

FAMILY: These are blogs that moms & dads write about their families.  Some of which focus on parenting, having a newborn, their successes in certain areas of their family, etc.  This is definitely something I hope to have the privilege of blogging about in the future!

My all time FAVORITE family blog is The Macs!  This is written by a momma & wife who loves Jesus dearly & blogs about her two precious baby boys, Levi & Griffin!  They actually had a baby girl back in 2008 who they lost after a short 11 months to cancer.  Their story is incredibly inspiring & her day-to-day writings are awesome!

DIY (do-it-yourself): These are blogs that document all their DIY successes & failures.  They do tons of tutorials & teach about simple yet great looking projects & improvements for the home!

My all time FAVORITE DIY blog is Young House Love! YHL is written by John & Sherry Petersik.  They live in Richmond, VA & get this… THEY ARE FULL TIME BLOGGERS!  They are married with one little girl, Clara & their precious dog, Burger!  They've been at it for 5 years & both quit their day jobs about 2 years into blogging.  Go check them out!

MINISTRY: Blogs I follow and have put in this category are the most similar to mine.  They exist with a primary purpose to be in ministry.  There are plenty of family & personal blogs that simultaneously do ministry while serving another purpose.  These classified as ministry blogs however, solely exist with the goal of doing ministry.

My all time FAVORITE ministry blog is Boundless Line.  This blog is put on by a ministry called Focus on the Family & is directed specifically to young singles.  It can be applicable & helpful to virtually any young adult but is primarily focused on an audience in their single years.  They do a podcast once a week & have blog posts every day by various Focus bloggers.  It's an awesome ministry & i have been hugely blessed by it!

ADOPTION: These are blogs about different people's journey to adoption!  They are written by mommas who are documenting the entire process of their adoption.  I love adoption & hope to adopt some day, in which case I also hope to be able to blog about it at some point in the future!  :)

My all time FAVORITE adoption blog is called "Ethiopia - here we come!"  This sweet sweet family adopted a little boy Eli from Ethiopia in December of 2008 and just recently a little girl named Ruthie in April 2012.  They are the two CUTEST children I have ever laid eyes on.  They are just the most precious family & I so love when she posts about all the cute & silly things the kids do.  Go give them a view & a comment!

PERSONAL: These are blogs people write just for their personal enjoyment.  These are mainly people I know personally, unlike most other blogs I follow which belong to total strangers.  Most people just talk about things that are going on in their life!

My all time FAVORITE personal blog is The Beauty of Simplicity.  This one is written by my sweet friend Heather!  She is such a fun writer & a super interesting & unique person.  I met her a little over two years ago at Foundation Camp just before we started our freshman year of college here at Tech.  She loves Jesus a lot & writes in a way that captivates me!  I love her so much!  :) Go give her a view!

So there you have it!  These are some of my favorite blogs!  Do you follow any blogs?  What types of blogs do you like to read?  Do you have any suggestions of blogs I might like?

And in honor of the day of the week, I'll leave you with this!

Happy Throwback Thursday!

Blogiversary 1: Personal Video Blog

So it's Day #3 of Blogiversary Week!  :)  Here's my very first video blog here at Reflections!

Here it is…

Thanks & Happy Wednesday!

Blogiversary 1: Top 3 Reader Favorites

Hello bloggy world!

Today is Day #2 of my 1st Blogiversary Week!  Today I'm going to talk about the top 3 most viewed posts of the year, aka reader favorites!

In third place, we have my post FROM HAITI!  You can check it out here.  Basically, one day while I was in Haiti, I blogged on the mission website & linked it to my personal blog so everyone could follow along!  This post came in with a whopping 49 views!

2 In second place, we have a post entitled "kids these days" which talked about my incredible experience with West Youth!  This was based on the first time I hung out with them at Evolve weekend, and today I'm very much involved in their ministry!  You can check it out here!  This post came in with 63 views!  (pictures are more recent...from our Mud Dash!)

1 And in first place…drum roll please….a post I titled "Jesus Refines".  This was written after an awesome Spring Retreat about nine months ago.  I talked about my experience with Jesus & what was going on in my heart at the time.  That one can be found here.  This post received the most views any post have ever gotten in my time on the blog.  70 views!

Some close competitors were "Christian vs. Secular Music", "Choosing Joy", and "Fall Retreat, Wesley Style" coming in with 46, 44, & 41 views respectively.

Speaking of stats & fun facts…

My blog has received 1,781 all time views.  I have been blogging since November 7, 2011…technically today is my 364th day as a blogger.  I've posted 51 times, and have held Reflections on two different blog sites, first wordpress, then blogger.  I have received a mere SEVEN comments in the last YEAR on the blog.  Pretty sad, huh!?  A lot of people tend to comment on the link to my blog when I post it on facebook, but I would love it SO much more if people would comment HERE on the blog :)

Hope you enjoyed that fun little walk down memory lane!

Happy Tuesday!
